Atlanta man charged in Hampton Bays credit card scam

A Georgia man was arrested and charged with using fake or stolen credit cards as he tried to pick up computer equipment he'd ordered from a Hampton Bays store, police said.

Police said Joshua Johnson, 24, of Atlanta, had a history of using fraudulent or stolen credit cards to buy computer equipment, then resell it on Craigslist.

Johnson this week agreed to purchase more than $4,000 worth of computer equipment from a Hampton Bays computer store, again using a stolen card, Southampton Town police said.

The store owner discovered the card was a fake and contacted police, who waited for Johnson to pick up the equipment he'd ordered - then arrested him at the scene Wednesday.

Johnson was charged with third-degree grand larceny and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. He was scheduled for arraignment Thursday in Southampton Justice Court.

Police said that when detectives questioned him, Johnson "initially identified himself as the person named on the credit card and offered a fictitious North Carolina driver's license as proof of his identity."

Johnson was found to have several additional credit cards police believe are fraudulent or stolen, they said. An investigation is ongoing, police said.
