Babylon schools head: Teen's collapse unrelated to athletics

A teenage girl who went into cardiac arrest on the sidelines of a Babylon school lacrosse practice suffers from a medical condition not related to athletics, the district superintendent said Tuesday.

The girl, 17, collapsed Monday at a Babylon school field and was taken to a hospital, police said.

Information concerning her condition was not immediately available. Citing confidentiality standards, a school official refused to provide details Tuesday.

“This is one of our students,” Babylon Union Free School District Superintendent Ellen Best-Laimit said. “It’s a medical situation unrelated to athletics.”

She would not say whether the girl was a member of the lacrosse team or had participated in the practice.

“It’s not related to athletics,” she said.

Police said the teen first complained of not feeling well at about 4:30 p.m. on a field at Babylon Elementary School.
She told someone nearby that she had a headache shortly before collapsing, police said.
