Three Suffolk County beaches are closed to swimmers because of elevated bacteria levels, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services said Thursday.

The beaches are Lake Ronkonkoma Beach in the Town of Islip, Tanner Park Beach in Copiague on the Great South Bay and Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore.

The bacteria buildup is a combination of a lack of consistent tide flushings and droppings from geese and other fowl, spokeswoman Grace Kelly-McGovern said.

Beachgoers can access the department's Bathing Beach hotline, 631-852-5822, or visit suffolkcountyny.gov/health for information on beach closings.
