Bay Shore firefighters battle barge blaze
Firefighters battled a fire on a 50-foot, two-story steel-frame dredging barge in Bay Shore for about an hour Saturday morning.
Bay Shore Assistant Chief John Ippolito said they received a call at 9:53 a.m. for a boat fire. Ippolito said the boat was docked at the end of Homan Avenue in the Penataquit Creek. The boat belonged to Gibson and Cushman Dredging Co., at 38 Homan Ave., he said.
Ippolito said there were three people working on the boat when the fire started, but no one was injured. He said Islip, West Islip, East Islip and Brentwood fire departments assisted and they had two fire boats in the water.
He said the fire was under control by 11:09 a.m. and had been extinguished.
Islip Town fire marshal is investigating the fire, but he said it isn't suspicious and there was no contamination in the water because of the blaze.
