Firefighters rescued a woman from the bedroom of a burning house in Bay Shore Monday.

Bay Shore Fire Department Chief John Ippolito Jr. said firefighters found her in the bedroom of a home on North First Avenue at 12:35 p.m. The house was locked and smoking, he said.

“The first unit made entry and found the fire on the first floor,” he said. “While they were attacking the fire, they conducted a search and found a victim in the bedroom.”

Suffolk County police, in an emailed news release, said the woman was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore before being transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

Suffolk County Police Department’s Arson Squad was investigating the cause of the fire, which was under control by 1:20 p.m.

Ippolito said the home had received “significant damage.”
