A fire at a single-story Baywood house killed a man late Thursday, Suffolk County police said.

Curley Tutt, 62, who lived in a basement apartment at the house on Grant Avenue, south of Pine Aire Drive, died because of the fire at about 10:30 p.m., police said.

Several adults and children who also lived in the home were able to escape safely, police said.

Police and fire responded after residents of the house, in which several families lived, called about the fire, police said.

Homicide and arson detectives are investigating, and police said they believe the fire originated in the basement. It does not appear to be criminal in nature, police also said.

The Brentwood fire department was in charge of fighting the blaze, with help from the East Brentwood, Bay Shore, North Babylon and Deer Park departments, authorities said.
