Bicyclist, 61, fatally hit by vehicle

A 61-year-old West Babylon man was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding his bicycle Tuesday night along Wellwood Avenue in North Lindenhurst, Suffolk police said.
The name of the victim was not released, pending notification of next of kin.
Police said the accident occurred at 9:25 p.m. on southbound Wellwood at Berry Street. The bicyclist was attempting to cross Berry when he was hit by a southbound 2006 Volkswagen driven by Michael Edwards of Wheatley Heights.
Police said Edwards, 36, remained at the scene. He was not injured and not charged.
Volunteers from North Lindenhurst Rescue transported the victim to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where police said he was pronounced dead.
The investigation is continuing, police said. Police ask anyone with information about the accident to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
