An unidentified bicyclist was hospitalized in critical condition Friday after he was struck by a vehicle while traveling along Veterans Memorial Highway in Holbrook, Suffolk police said.

The injured man, 35 to 40-years-old, was riding a blue "Roadmaster Mountain Fury" east on the left-hand shoulder of the westbound lane, police said. His bicycle apparently veered into the traffic lane near St. James Street about 4:30 p.m., police said, and was struck by a 1997 Ford Explorer.

The bicyclist was taken by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center, police said, where he was admitted in critical condition. The driver of the Explorer, Cleofes Velasques, 33, 25 Eastern Ave., Brentwood, was not injured, police said.

Fifth squad detectives asked that anyone with information concerning the crash or who knows the identity of the bicyclist, contact them at 631-854-8552.
