Bicyclist killed by truck in E. Northport
A 54-year-old bicyclist was killed Tuesday at the intersection of Elwood Road and Rocco Drive, in East Northport, when he was hit by a pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old Northport man, police said.
At about 5:45 p.m. Buenaventura Sorto Vasquez was riding north on the shoulder of Elwood Road when he entered the road and was struck by a 1995 Dodge pickup at the intersection of Rocco Drive, Suffolk County police said. The driver, Eric Schmidt, who was not injured, then struck a pole.
Vasquez was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police ask anyone with information about the accident to call Second Squad detectives at 631-854-8252.
