Bicyclist shot, injured in Wyandanch
A North Babylon man was shot in the ankle while riding a bicycle on a Wyandanch street Tuesday night, Suffolk police said.
Niegal Lewis, 18, of Court Street, was struck in the left ankle by one of four shots that were fired at him from two moving cars about 6:50 p.m., police said.
Det. Sgt. Marco Giudice said the victim was fortunate. "It didn't hit anything vital in his ankle," Giudice said. "It went in and out."
Lewis was riding his bicycle west on Nicolls Road near Napoli Drive when the two cars pulled along side of him and the shots were fired, police said.
The cars left the scene, Giudice said, and area residents notified authorities. Lewis was transported by Wheatley Heights Rescue Ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment, police said.
Giudice said the motive for the shooting is unknown and under investigation by First Squad detectives. Suffolk police requested that anyone with information contact detectives at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
