A bicyclist was struck and killed by a car Tuesday at a heavily traveled intersection in Brentwood, Suffolk police said.

Aaron Maldonado, 23, of Central Islip, was one of two men riding bicycles east on Taft Street at Washington Avenue at 5:50 p.m. when the accident happened, police said.

Det. Sgt. William Rand said there is a stop sign on Taft, but there are no traffic lights at that intersection where cars along Washington Avenue generally travel about 30 mph.

Witnesses told police Maldonado was struck when his bicycle cut in front of a westbound car driven by Jessica Mannara, 29, of Brentwood, Rand said.

Maldonado, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken by ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said. Mannara was not injured.

The 2010 Kia Forte that Mannara was driving was impounded for a safety check, and detectives asked that any witnesses to the accident call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

No charges were filed Tuesday, and police said there was no apparent criminality in the crash. The investigation is continuing.
