A birthday cake for a 96-year-old Commack man bought at a local supermarket contained parts of a rat, a Northport attorney said Friday.
The man's family discovered what appeared to be a rat tail and mold when they cut the cake during a Thursday night birthday party, according to attorney Edward Yule.
Yule said he was made aware of the incident by a friend of the family. He said no legal action has been taken, and he doesn't represent the elderly man or his family. A family friend said the German apple ring cake was purchased Monday at a King Kullen in Commack.
A King Kullen spokesman issued a statement that said the company will conduct an internal investigation and cooperate fully with any outside agencies.
"We took immediate steps as a precautionary measure," the statement said. "Product has been removed from the bakery and the premises have undergone a thorough inspection. There are no known safety or rodent issues in this bakery department and it is in good standing with all Department of Agriculture inspections."
