A Ridge man adrift in the Long Island Sound got assistance after a woman whose East Marion house is on the shoreline heard his cries for help and called police, authorities said.

Lawrence Beirele, 52, drifted about a mile with the current after falling off his boat, which was moored off Truman's Beach, when Peggylee Dzenkowski heard his cries for help about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday from behind her residence on Southern Boulevard and called police, Southold Town Police said in a statement Wednesday.

"Responding officers guided Beirele ashore with flashlights," police said in the statement.

Beirele was treated on the shore by members of the East Marion Fire Department Rescue Squad and released, police said.
