Investigators are trying to determine if the body of a man found on an Amagansett beach is that of a Chinese kayaker reported missing in Long Island Sound off Connecticut, they said Wednesday.

A jogger running near Marine Boulevard in Amagansett found the body in the surf on Tuesday, according to police. The body has been turned over to the Suffolk County medical examiner, police said.

East Hampton Town police said the case of the missing kayaker, Fengquan Guan, 33, of Beijing, is one of several missing persons cases being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Guan was visiting friends in Milford, Conn., when he went kayaking May 9 at about 11 a.m. He hasn't been seen since. His kayak was found washed ashore in Southold two days later, authorities said.

Asked if it was possible for a body to have drifted from the Long Island Sound around Montauk Point and onto an Atlantic Ocean beach, East Hampton police Capt. Ed Ecker said: "In my experience, it would be unusual. But I am told it is possible. It's certainly one of the possibilities we're considering."

When Guan disappeared, seas were 2 feet to 3 feet, with gusts of up to 23 mph. The water was about 50 degrees. Guan was wearing a lifejacket.

The Coast Guard, which briefly resumed its search for Guan when the kayak was found, estimated he could have survived in the water for about 14 hours. His family in China offered a $5,000 reward for anyone able to find him.
