A 13-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical but stable condition Wednesday after he was struck by a Long Island Rail Road train approaching the Bellport station, officials said.

The injured boy, whose name was not released, was hit just east of the station about 4:35 p.m. and taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, according to Aaron Donovan, an LIRR spokesman.

The passenger train, the 2:51 p.m. from Montauk that was due in to Jamaica at 5:50 p.m., was slowing down to make the scheduled 4:36 p.m. stop at the Bellport station when the crash occurred just east of the Station Road crossing, Donovan said.

Metropolitan Transit Authority police were investigating to determine why the teen was on the tracks at that location, which is not a designated crossing, Donovan said.

The train involved was delayed 75 minutes, Donovan said, but there were no other train delays or cancellations because of the crash.

This story has been corrected to reflect the correct age of the boy.
