A 4-year-old boy hospitalized after falling into a pool in Hauppauge has died, police said Tuesday.

A family friend and an official confirmed Shane Brennan's death.

Shane had been in critical condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center after falling into the pool at the family's home Sunday. His father pulled him from the pool and performed CPR, police said. Officers arrived at the Mount Pleasant Road home about 2 p.m. and continued CPR.

Police said Tuesday night they did not know how Shane fell into the pool.

A man who answered the door at the home Tuesday night declined to comment.
