The driver was identified as Adolfo Munoz, 63, of Brentwood. Munoz was driving his black, 2000 Lexus south on Route 111 before getting in the path of a westbound nonpassenger Long Island Rail Road train shortly after 4 p.m., at the crossing on Islip Avenue in Central Islip.

Munoz was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and was pronounced dead a short time later. Service was disrupted between Ronkonkoma and Farmingdale on the Ronkonkoma branch for a couple of hours.

"It's still an active investigation. We are looking into the functioning of the gates and flashers and downloading the black box," Marjorie Anders, spokeswoman for the MTA, which owns the LIRR, said Saturday.

No other injuries were reported. The crash happened at the first crossing east of the Brentwood station, MTA officials said.
