A Brentwood man was shot in the arm after two men were let into the house, encountered the victim's girlfriend and got into a fight with the victim, Suffolk County police said.

Police said the incident occurred Thursday at 11:25 p.m. inside what police described as a "multiunit home" on Prospect Drive.

Carl McPherson, 44, ended up shot once in the left forearm by one of the attackers, who both wore dark scarves over their faces, police said.

He was admitted to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore in stable condition with what police called non-life-threatening injuries.

Police called the scenario leading to the shooting "convoluted" and said details are still emerging. The case remains under investigation, they said.

They said the two suspects were let into the home, apparently searching for McPherson. They went downstairs to McPherson's room and encountered his girlfriend, police said.

Police said McPherson, who was upstairs at the time, went downstairs and got into a fight with one of the men. Police said one of the assailants had a silver handgun - and shot McPherson. The two men then fled.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain anonymous, police said.
