Bridgehampton house fire may have been started by lightning, fire chief says
Bridgehampton firefighters battled a house fire early Sunday morning, which may have been started by a lightning strike from fast-moving storms that came through the region.
An assistant fire chief first discovered the blaze burning at 10 Bridgehill Lane in Bridgehampton shortly after 4 a.m., Bridgehampton Fire Chief Gary Horsburgh said.
Firefighters said the flames started in the basement of the two-story home and spread throughout the rest of the house. Once the fire was extinguished, the home was still standing but gutted inside by fire, smoke and water damage.
The family who owns the house wasn't home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
The exact cause of the blaze is under investigation, pending a fire marshal's report. Lightning is suspected, Horsburgh said. A cold front moving through the area overnight brought storms that broke last week's heat and humidity.
Bridgehampton firefighters called for extra manpower to fight the raging flames, Horsburgh said. The Hampton Bays, East Hampton, Southampton, Sag Harbor, North Sea and Springs fire departments also responded to the blaze.
