The Brookhaven Fair at Bald Hill said Monday it has increased security after two teenagers were stabbed outside the entrance to the fairgrounds.

The Farmingville Ambulance Squad took the 16-year-old victims to Stony Brook University Hospital, where one was treated for an injury that was "very minor, more like a scratch," a Suffolk County police spokeswoman said. The other teen had a wound that was not life-threatening, but exploratory surgery was performed as a precaution, the spokeswoman said.

The fair said the stabbing occurred Sunday night outside the fairgrounds and that its security and staff responded immediately.

"In light of this isolated incident, fair management has added additional security measures," the fair said in a statement. "Fair management will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of all patrons and staff."

The statement said, "This family event has been incident free since its inception 12 years ago."

Suffolk police said it "is unable to verify that the Brookhaven Fair has been incident-free during the past 12 years," and that "a statistical search" could not be completed Monday.

Police said there were no arrests and it was not known what triggered the 9:56 p.m. incident.

It was the third day of the annual fair, which runs through June 9.
