Brookhaven opens two new salt sheds
Brookhaven Town has two new salt sheds — just in time for an expected winter storm.
The sheds, which will add storage for about 2,000 tons of road salt, are located on Buckley Road in Holtsville and Papermill Road in Manorville, town Highway Department officials said in a news release.
Brookhaven and other Long Island towns struggled last year to maintain adequate salt supplies during a series of winter storms, due in part to backlogs at a Staten Island supplier. Forecasters have predicted this winter’s first significant snowfall may begin on Friday.
“These two new facilities have increased the town’s available road-salt material by 10 percent,” Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro said in a statement. “Increasing our salt capacity on the ground will make Brookhaven more self-sufficient and rely less on our supplier’s availability to deliver this critical winter resource.”
Losquadro said the town completed a new salt shed last year in Mount Sinai. Three more salt sheds expected to be completed over the next 18 months would bring Brookhaven’s salt storage capacity to almost 25,000 tons, he said.
