Brooklyn man faces ID theft charges

A Brooklyn man is facing identity theft charges after he was found in possession of 20 driver’s licenses from three different states as well as almost 300 sets of Social Security numbers, police said.

Egbunike, of 8 Monument Walk, Brooklyn, faces arraignment Friday in First District Court in Central Islip on five counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and second-degree unlawful possession of personal identification information.

Police said it was not immediately clear what led Mamaroneck police to track down and arrest Egbunike, but said detectives there contacted Suffolk police about potential crimes over which they had no jurisdiction. The case was then investigated by detectives from the Suffolk police department’s Identity Theft Unit.

Suffolk police said that after Mamaroneck police arrested Egbunike, detectives from that department obtained a search warrant for Egbunike’s car, from which they recovered 10 New Jersey driver’s licenses, nine Maryland driver’s licenses and one license from Connecticut – with Egbunike’s photo on each of them. Mamaroneck detectives also recovered names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers for 289 people.

It was not immediately clear what Egbunike was doing with the licenses and numbers, but police said the investigation is continuing.
