A brush fire in a wooded area adjacent to the Suffolk County Fire Academy and the Long Island Compost facility in Yaphank was extinguished not long after it started thanks to the work of firefighters from four departments, officials said.

Suffolk County police and fire officials said the fire was reported shortly before 2 p.m. Monday. Firefighters were wrapping up the scene at about 3 p.m., fire officials said.

Firefighters from Brookhaven, Yaphank, Bellport and Mastic battled the brush fire, which was in danger of spreading due to strong, gusting winds and conditions that the National Weather Service said are conducive to producing dangerous brush fires.

The weather service issued an earlier advisory warning of dangerous brush fire conditions Monday in Nassau, Suffolk and New York City.

Fire officials said it was not clear how the fire started.
