Bystanders come to rescue of distressed swimmer in East Hampton

Two bystanders, including a Michigan man, helped East Hampton Village Police rescue a distressed swimmer Thursday at Main Beach.

Juan Carlos Salvana, 30, of Long Island City, was found off the edge of the surf, unconscious and without a pulse, when police responded to a call for a swimmer in trouble, at about 4:30 p.m.

Police officers and Dr. Louis Cohen performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before Salvana was taken to Southampton Hospital, where he is in critical condition, police said.

After an investigation, police determined Bill Roberson of Michigan swam out into the waters and pulled Salvana to safety.

A police spokeswoman said she was unable to provide a town or village of residence for Cohen.
