A man trying to cross a street was struck and killed by a car Wednesday evening in North Bay Shore, Suffolk police said.

Marty Karl, 65, of North Bay Shore, was hit on Manatuck Boulevard near Hemlock Drive at about 5:15 p.m. by a southbound Volkswagen Jetta, whose driver stayed at the scene, police said.

That location is not well-lighted, said Det. Sgt. Adam Bickerton of the Third Precinct.

“It was dark, and from what witnesses said, the person kind of walked into traffic,” Bickerton said.

No evidence of speeding, drunken driving or other criminality was found, he said.

Karl was taken by Brentwood Legion Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead about 5:45 p.m., police said.
