Suffolk County police are investigating an accident early Thursday in which a pedestrian was seriously injured when hit by a car in Mount Sinai.

Police in a news release said Daniel Colasanto, 18, was in the road at about 1 a.m. when he was hit by a 2010 Honda that was driving east on Route 25A near West Gate Drive.

Colasanto, of Port Jefferson Station, was taken by Port Jefferson Ambulance to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson with serious injuries.

The driver, Wendy Elsen, 48, of Miller Place, was not injured; she stayed at the scene and no charges are pending, police said.

Her car was impounded for a safety check.

Portions of Route 25A in Port Jefferson and Mount Sinai were closed just after the crash until as late as 6 a.m., police said.
