A Babylon woman drowned Sunday morning after she jumped into the Connetquot River in Oakdale to save her dog, Suffolk County police said.

An employee of the Oakdale Yacht Club on Shore Drive called 911 at 8:07 a.m. after seeing the woman, Catherine Andreou, 62, in the river, according to Homicide Squad detectives

Andreou, who was staying on a houseboat, was pulled from the water and pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

An investigation determined that Andreou leapt into the water at 1:30 a.m. to rescue her dog, which had jumped into the river. The dog was rescued and taken to a veterinarian, authorities said.

The Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner will determine an official cause of death.
