A fire that badly damaged a former topless club in Centereach is being investigated as a possible arson, officials said Monday.

About 80 firefighters from three departments battled the fire in the one-story building on Middle Country Road near Hammond Road that had housed the Body Talk Lounge until it closed years ago, officials said.

The fire was reported about 11:55 p.m. Sunday and drew responses from the Centereach, Farmingville and Ronkonkoma fire departments, according to Centereach Chief Derek Anderson. The firefighters finished shortly before 3 a.m. Monday, he said.

He said there were no unusual problems in fighting the blaze, and that one Centereach firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

The Arson Squad of the Suffolk County Police Department is investigating, Anderson and a police spokeswoman said.
