Central Islip man found fatally shot in Brentwood
A Central Islip man was found shot to death in a secluded and overgrown utility right-of-way in Brentwood Thursday morning, Suffolk police said.
The body of Bayron Omar Vasquez Nunez, 19, was discovered by a Long Island Power Authority contractor cutting grass near the corner of Brentwood Parkway and Pelham Drive at 11:50 a.m., police said.
Homicide Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman said, as yet, there is no apparent motive for the shooting. "We're not ruling anything out as regards gang or drug activity, anything," he said.
Officers canvassing the area said "Neighbors reported hearing shots about 10:30 or 11 p.m." Wednesday, Groneman said. "Apparently nobody called the police . . . some said they thought it was fireworks."
Groneman said it is believed that he was killed there in the area where he was found.
The victim was discovered in a corner of an area where someone apparently once made a makeshift mini-playground and erected a metal swing set, Groneman said, but it appears as though it had not been used for many years.
Detectives asked that anyone with information about incident contact the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
