A 62-year-old man was killed Thursday night after he was struck by a car as he tried to cross Motor Parkway in Central Islip, officials said.

John Parlapiano of Central Islip was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's office.

Parlapiano was trying to cross Motor Parkway at the Oakland Avenue intersection about 7:50 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound 2008 Hyundai driven by Carlos Gonzalez, 69, also of Central Islip.

Gonzalez was not injured. His vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing, according to police.

Detectives are asking anyone that may have witnessed the crash to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
