A 23-year-old Central Islip man is in serious but stable condition at a hospital Friday after he was shot in the neck Thursday evening, police said.

Suffolk County police said the man, who was not identified, was walking near the corner of East Elm Street and Prospect Avenue in Central Islip when a man approached him -- and then shot him -- at about 10:15 p.m.

The gunman fled. Police said the victim was able to flag down a passing driver, who took him to the Central Islip Fire Department.

Firefighters stabilized the victim, then took him to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.

Police said the investigation is continuing and have not released additional details.

Detectives are asking anyone with information contact Third Squad detectives at 1-631-854-8352 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
