Central Islip man, 90, injured after falling into storm drain

A 90-year-old man fell 10 feet down a storm drain Saturday afternoon outside his apartment complex in Central Islip, sustaining serious injuries, said Suffolk County police.
Officers responded to the call around 1:15 p.m. to the drain outside the Islip Landing apartment complex at 201 Medea Way, police said. Firefighters from the Central Islip Fire Department and Hauppauge Fire Department also responded.
First responders pulled the man out and transported him to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment. Police did not release the man's name.
The man was first found by a couple of neighbors who called 911.
In an interview, neighbor Charlie Marshall said he was talking a walk when he noticed his neighbor’s car by the dumpster with its driver’s door open and the engine running. After seeing the man down in the drain, Marshall and another man, Dwayne Kirkland, called first responders.
"We were just glad we could be there for him and that it wasn’t raining or snowing cause we probably wouldn’t have been out here or anybody else," Kirkland said. "And we just pray that our neighbor is OK."
