A Central Islip Senior High School teacher was suspended with pay after police said he had to be subdued with a stun gun during his arrest on a drunken driving charge in Eastport.

Jay Condrill, 47, was arrested after officers responding to a disturbance call at the Triangle Pub on Old Montauk Highway at 11:21 p.m. Tuesday saw him exiting his vehicle in an apparent "intoxicated condition," Suffolk police said.

Officers Timothy Benson and Scott Jensen said that when they attempted to arrest Condrill he "threatened to physically harm the officers" and refused orders "to place his hands behind his back."

Condrill threatened to kick the officers in the groin and pushed and shoved them, said Bob Clifford, a spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney's office. He also drove without car lights on, he said.

Police said the officers were "forced to use physical force" and "ultimately had to deploy a Taser" to arrest Condrill. Officers smelled alcohol on his breath, but he refused to take a Breathalyzer test, Clifford said.

Condrill, of 611 Montauk Hwy. in Eastport, was released on his own recognizance Wednesday after arraignment on charges of driving while intoxicated, disorderly conduct in a public place using abusive or obscene language or making an obscene gesture, and resisting arrest.

"I've known Mr. Condrill and his family many years," said Condrill's attorney, Thomas Spreer of Babylon. "I know him to be a hard worker and fine father."

Central Islip superintendent Craig Carr said Condrill is a special-education teacher at the school. "At this time we are suspending him with pay pending the outcome of his guilt or innocence," Carr said, declining to comment further on the arrest or Condrill's teaching background.

Police said Condrill had been asked to leave the Triangle Pub after "reportedly acting in a disorderly manner" but returned. He was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue.
