A Holtsville movie theater was closed Wednesday after Town of Brookhaven authorities determined its fire detection system was defective, deeming the theater unsafe for occupancy, officials said.

A notice was posted on the entrance doors of the Island 16 Cinema, at 185 Morris Ave, saying the department of public safety determined at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday the building was unsafe.

The theater cannot open until the fire detection system is repaired, Chief Fire Marshal Chris Mehrman told Newsday.

By 8 a.m. Thursday, the theater’s mostly empty parking lots, entrances, sidewalks and outdoor seating area were substantially clear of snow and ice.

Purple salts could be seen on the front entrance walkway and sidewalks, along with an unoccupied Bobcat plow.

A person answering the phone at the theater and identifying themselves only as a manager declined to comment.
