A man was last seen clamming was found dead Tuesday afternoon by a local boater in Shinnecock Bay near Wells Creek in Hampton Bays, police said.

Southampton Town police said it was not clear how Wayne A. Mordes, 58, of Hampton Bays, died. The Suffolk County medical examiner will attempt to determine a cause of death, police said.

Mordes had been clamming in nearby waters, though it was not clear when he was last seen alive, police said.

A boater found Mordes about 5 p.m., police said, and police recovered his body with the assistance of the bay constable, the town police dive unit and the Hampton Bays Fire Department.

Police said an investigation is continuing Wednesday. Anyone with information is urged to call town police at 631-728-5000 or the crime hotline at 631-728-3454. All calls will remain confidential.
