A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for New York City and points west until 9 p.m. Friday, but Long Island probably will not be affected, the National Weather Service said.
Nassau and Suffolk have about a 30 percent of showers and thunderstorms Friday night, said meteorologist David Stark at the National Weather Service in Upton.
"The biggest threat will be to New York City and areas to the west," Stark said. He said the weather system likely will abate after midnight.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms could hit the Island during the weekend, and skies will probably turn sunny Monday, according to the latest forecast.
