Long Islanders celebrating the holiday on the road, at home or at the New York Giants and Jets game can expect temperatures in the 40s, as well as more cars on the road.

The National Weather Service is forecasting dry weather with highs in the lower 40s on Saturday, dropping to the upper 20s Saturday night.

Christmas Day is also expected to be dry and partly sunny with highs in the mid-40s. The overnight temperature is expected to reach the mid-20s to low 30s, says Lauren Nash, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, based in Upton.

Around the country, more than 91.9 million travelers are expected to take trips of at least 50 miles from home this holiday season, a 1.4 percent increase compared to last year, according to AAA forecasts.

Year-end holiday travel in the mid-Atlantic region is expected to increase by 1.2 percent this holiday season compared to a year ago. Automobile travel is projected to increase by 1.8 percent, while travel by airplane is forecast to decline by 8.4 percent, an AAA report showed.

The Long Island Rail Road is operating on a weekend / holiday schedule on Saturday and Sunday. Trains will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Monday.

There will be a slight chance of rain Monday morning, but the rest of the day is expected to be dry, with temperatures in the lower 40s, Nash says.

Tuesday will be in the mid- to upper 40s, with a high chance of rain starting in the afternoon into Wednesday morning. Wednesday is expected to be in the lower 40s.
