Conflicting claims on Wyandanch LIRR parking spots

Babylon Town officials said last month that all but about 50 of 654 free outdoor parking spots at the Wyandanch Long Island Rail Road Station will be reserved for permitted town residents Sept. 1, but the matter might not be settled.
LIRR officials said the agency owns 176 surface parking spots at the station, and spokesman Salvatore Arena said early last week that "the railroad intends to make those spots unrestricted and obviously free."
In a statement, Arena wrote that the LIRR and the town "have successfully collaborated throughout the evolution of the Wyandanch Rising initiative. We are reviewing this matter and expect to work out a resolution."
Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said last week that the town has a copy of a 1958 deed to the land where some of those spots are located. "The railroad deeded that land to the Town of Babylon," Schaffer said.
