Police: Man who approached Connetquot student was picking up family member at school

A man who was reported to police after he approached a high school student Thursday in Bohemia was in the area to pick up a family member from school, Suffolk County police said.

Connetquot Central School District officials had urged students to be mindful of their surroundings after the female student reported being approached by the man on Thursday afternoon.

In an email sent out to the Connetquot community at about 3 p.m. Thursday, Superintendent Lynda Adams wrote that a man in a gray Hyundai Sonata approached the student on Hill Drive at about 1:30 p.m.

Suffolk police spoke with the man Thursday evening and determined that he was traveling to the high school to pick up a family member, a police spokeswoman said Friday. Investigators are still investigating the circumstances of the encounter, but the spokeswoman said they do not believe anything of a criminal nature happened.

In a statement posted on the district website, officials said that although the incident had been resolved, student safety was their top priority.

"It is always important to speak with your children about keeping themselves safe," the statement read. "Please be assured that the school will continue to take responsible and appropriate measures to protect our students."
