Cop, driver hurt as patrol car rear-ended on LIE

A Suffolk County highway patrol officer had minor injuries Monday morning after his car was rear-ended at the scene of an oil-slickened lane of the LIE in Manorville, police said.

A department spokeswoman said the officer had closed a right lane of the westbound Long Island Expressway near Exit 69, Wading River Road, at about 9 a.m. because a truck leaked oil on the roadway.

A driver rear-ended the police car and she was ticketed for violating the state's "move-over" traffic law, the spokeswoman said.

Both the officer and driver were transported to a nearby hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The law requires that when possible motorists must change lanes when approaching an incident where a vehicle is flashing red or amber lights. When it is not possible to move to another lane, the approaching motorist must slow down, according to the law.
