A woman whose car was hit by a dump truck as she left the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Thursday morning was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center, Suffolk County police said.

A police spokeswoman did not have an update on the woman's condition Thursday afternoon but said the injuries were "nonlife threatening."

Police said the woman was driving a Mercedes and her car was struck by a dump truck as she left the shelter on Horseblock Road at 10:23 a.m.

Police said investigators from the Motor Carrier Safety inspection team, which specializes in commercial truck and tractor-trailer safety, were dispatched to the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, police said.
