Cops: 1 person killed on Southern State
State police are investigating a fatal accident on the Southern State Parkway in North Babylon Thursday night.
Police said the single-car crash happened about 7:19 p.m. as the driver was heading westbound on the parkway, just east of exit 39. A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver - the only person in the 2002 Buick Century - lost control, and the car then veered off the north side of the parkway and struck a tree, police said.
Police have not identified the victim, pending positive identification from the medical examiner's office, they said.
Any witnesses are asked to contact the New York State Police at (631) 756-3300.
It was unclear if the crash was weather-related.
