Two men were killed and a mother and her 3-year-old son were seriously injured Friday night in a two-car crash at an intersection in Deer Park, Suffolk police said.

The survivors of the 6:38 p.m. accident at Commack Road and Suburban Avenue were taken by ambulance and helicopter to hospitals, where they were listed in critical condition, police said.

The male victims were both behind the wheel at the time of the crash, police said.

Investigators told News 12 Long Island that one of the cars was headed north on Commack Road and the other was headed south when they hit head-on.

Police did not immediately release the names of the victims.

Traffic was diverted away from the scene for hours as police investigated amid the severely mangled vehicles well into the night.

Residents said cars commonly speed in the area and crashes are a concern.

"I was braiding my niece's hair," she said. "I'm so used to it I didn't get up to look outside. I continued to braid."

Harrison said she later looked out her window and saw the wreckage, as well as police and emergency personnel scrambling to tend to the victims.

"I see the four wheels," she said of one of the vehicles. "Where's the rest of the car?"

Tyrone Bennett, president of the South East Concerned Civic Association, said the intersection needs traffic signals to slow motorists. "It's a chronically bad intersection," he said. "Commack Road is a very busy road. You have blind spots with these trees."
