A Huntington Station man is scheduled to be arraigned Friday after he allegedly fled from police during a routine stop early Thursday morning and crashed his car into an SUV, seriously injuring his 22-year-old passenger.

Calvin Felder, also 22, is preliminarily charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. Police said additional charges were pending.

His passenger, Mike Smith, also of Huntington Station, suffered serious head injuries and was in critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip Thursday afternoon.

William Keyser, 39, the driver of the SUV, was treated for minor neck and back injuries at Good Samaritan and released.

Felder also suffered minor injuries.

Christopher Cassar, a Huntington attorney and friend of Smith's family, said his relatives are at his bedside. "The situation is very grave," Cassar said.

The accident happened around 1:35 a.m. Thursday.

Police had attempted to pull Felder over in Brentwood, Suffolk County officials said; it's not clear why.

Felder fled from police and eluded them for seven minutes until he ran a red light at Deer Park Avenue and Long Island Avenue in Deer Park and crashed into Keyser's 2001 GMC Denali, officials said.
