Cops: 3 rescued after canoe capsizes in Hamptons

Three Hampton Bays residents rescued three men whose canoe overturned in Tiana Bay Thursday morning, sending the trio on the boat into the water, police said.

Southampton Town police said the rescue took place about 100 yards offshore near the Hampton Arms Resort just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The trio of boaters, identified by police as Christian Pacheco, 32, of Hampton Bays, and Anthony Galves, 28, and Wilber Saldana, 39, both of Queens, were in a canoe when one stood -- causing the canoe to overturn, sending all three men into the bay waters. None wore life jackets, police said.

Several 911 calls reported the a boat had capsized and three people "were struggling in the water," police said. Town police and town bay constables, as well as volunteers from the Hampton Bays Fire Department, Hampton Bays Ambulance and the U.S. Coast Guard were all dispatched to the scene. However, police said three resort residents, identified as Mark O'Mara, Tom Miqueli and Walter Schutz, took their own boat and rescued the three victims from the bay waters.

The trio from the capsized canoe were then transported to the Peconic Bay Medical Center by Hampton Bays Ambulance to be treated for nonlife threatening injuries, police said.
