Cops: Driver charged with DWI in Central Islip hit-run that left pedestrian seriously hurt
A Brentwood man was arrested Friday and charged with drunken driving after he hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk in Central Islip, then drove away, Suffolk police said.
Alejandro Diaz, 33, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east on Suffolk Avenue when he veered off the road about 3 a.m. and struck Mark Pamphile, seriously injuring him, police said.
Pamphile, 22, of Central Islip, was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with serious injuries. His condition was not immediately known.
Diaz, of Crooked Hill Road, was arrested shortly after the crash, not far from where he hit the pedestrian, and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and with driving while intoxicated, police said.
He was held for his arraignment, scheduled for Saturday.
The crash briefly closed Suffolk Avenue between Route 111 and Bergen Street, police said.
Third Squad detectives are investigating.
