A bank inside a West Islip supermarket was robbed Friday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

The robber gave a note demanding cash to a teller at People's United Bank inside Stop & Shop on Union Boulevard about 3 p.m., police said.

The teller gave the robber cash from the drawers, police said, and the suspect took off. Other details were not released.

It's the second time in about a week that a robber has taken money from a People's United Bank branch in a Stop & Shop.

On Aug. 2, a man handed a note to the teller in a Farmingville Stop & Shop, police said in a news release last week.

In the West Islip case, the robber was a man with a fair complexion and facial hair, wearing a baseball hat, dark clothing and white sneakers, police said. He was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 30 to 40 years old, with a lean to medium build, police said.

In the Farmingville robbery, the suspect also had a fair complexion and facial hair, police said. He was wearing a baseball hat, dark clothing and sneakers, according to police, and had a lean to medium build. But in this case, witnesses reported he was at least 6 feet tall, police said.

Detectives could not immediately comment Friday night on whether the two robberies may have been committed by the same man.

Anyone with information may call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
