Police believe that bones found on Gilgo Beach Sunday are not the remains of a human.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's office notified police of its preliminary findings, a spokeswoman said Monday afternoon.

"Preliminary indications are that the found remains are not human," she said.

Remains found in December in the brush off westbound Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach were identified in January as being those of four women who were working as prostitutes when they went missing, Suffolk County police said. Investigators are trying to determine if those women were victims of a serial killer.

Police said they received a 911 call from a man regarding the latest find at Gilgo Beach at about 4 p.m. Sunday. The caller was not identified. A woman later told News 12 Long Island said she had seen bones, which she described as vertebrae.

Earlier Monday, police would only say that a Marine Bureau officer responded to the site, located not far from the Nassau County line, and then turned over evidence to the medical examiner.
