Cops: Beware of websites falsely linked with Boston Marathon

Internet watch groups and security experts have identified multiple fake website domains and social media accounts that claim to be associated with the bombings, police said in a Wednesday news release.

Several of the accounts popped up only hours after the attack, and experts believe the number of these accounts will rise in the coming days, the release said.

Police said Internet users should not open unsolicited emails or click any links or attachments.

Be cautious of all websites that claim to provide information on an event, as they may contain viruses, police said.

Also, users should avoid sending sensitive information before confirming a website's legitimacy and security. Malicious websites may look identical to a legitimate website with a different URL (.com vs. .net).
