A 12-year-old boy on a mini-dirt bike was hit by a taxi Thursday afternoon in Sound Beach, Suffolk police said.
The boy, John Vento of Sound Beach, had serious head, neck and leg injuries and was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Medical Center, police said.
Islandwide Taxi driver Darnell Edwards, 24, was going west on Plandome Road at 4 p.m., police said, and as he approached the crest of a hill, his Ford Crown Victoria crashed into the oncoming boy on his bike.
The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the dirt bike, hit the taxi and fell to the ground, police said.
Seventh Precinct Patrol Officer Jamie Rios and a Good Samaritan performed CPR on the boy until an ambulance arrived, according to police.
Edwards' Ford was impounded for a safety check.
Detectives ask anyone with information to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
